Dell XPS M1330 – Make Multimedia Keys To Work With iTunes

with 48 comments

I just now installed iTunes 64-Bit on my vista and noticed that the multimedia keys only work when the itunes main window is in focus, which is very irritating.

After a little bit of googling I found out this post and his solution works. This is what you have to do to fix this issue.

Download this plugin: (I uploaded the plugin to my site, just in case if the author removes it)

mmkeys.dll

Copy the file to iTunes Plug-ins folder

For XP Users: “C:\Program Files\iTunes\Plug-ins”
Vista Users: “C:\Users\your_username\AppData\Roaming\Apple Computer\iTunes\iTunes Plug-ins”
In each case, you have to create this folder if it doesn’t already exist.

Now restart iTunes and your multimedia key should work.

I wonder if you can get this to work with other media apps (songbird, winamp, etc.)

  25. Solved an age-old problem!
Although with mine there’s a short delay between each media key being pressed and the appropriate action being taken, it still beats alt-tabbing all the time!
    Many thanks!

  31. I have Windows 7 and do not have the folder AppData\Roaming\Apple Computer\iTunes\iTunes Plug-ins”

Once I enter the username folder, all I have is My Pictures, My Music, My Downloads, blablabla.

    What do I do?

  32. Hey Nick. To find the app data folder, you need to show the hidden files.

    here’s how:

Computer–> Users –> Nick (or whatever its called)

From here, press Alt. and click tools. Then click folder options. Go to the View tab and from there find the option that says view hidden files or something like that. Make sure show hidden folders is selected.

    Hope this helps!

OMG! thank you so much that tip! One thing I was ticked at with Vista and 7 is them getting rid of the menus from WinExplorer. So glad to have them back now!
And I have the hotkeys finally working!
